We need tables and chairs to open the UBUNTU Community Kitchen and feed the hungry

What We Need
We urgently need 300 chairs and 15 metal folding tables to open the doors and start serving the community - in the Community Kitchen and Hall. All the other basic necessities are in place for us to open the doors and functioning simply but effectively.

Service to the People - Heart of the Community
The revamped town hall will be the heart of the community because this is where the community kitchen is located, that will feed all those who participate in the many community projects on a daily basis - this will include the orphans, the aged, the homeless and all those who simply cannot afford to buy food.
The new UBUNTU Community Hall will also be the venue for daily literacy classes, sewing, knitting, the new gym, martial arts, yoga, concerts, theatre, talent shows, movies, documentaries and much more activity - a true community centre.

The Bad State of the Hall
The badly vandalised town hall was rescued from complete destruction by Michael Tellinger and the UBUNTU movement in Waterval Boven, South Africa. When we took over the venue it was in a disgusting state. The doors were all open and broken, some were ripped off causing damage to frames and structure; everything inside this amazing large venue was broken, stolen and vandalised. Most of the fixtures in the kitchen, bathrooms, toilets, plumbing, lights and electrical wires were ripped out and damaged.

The stage and back stage area was reduced to a rubbish dump and so was the surrounding garden. There was no electricity and no lights.
The worst part was that the entire hall had turned into large public toilet with human excrement everywhere. The lower part of the venue was filled with water from leaking water pipes mixed with human excrement, urine and trash, several inches deep. It was truly disgusting.

The Restoration
The first thing we did was to install metal security gates on 4 external doors, to prevent vandals from entering and causing more damage. Then the real work started. We spent 4 months cleaning, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, scraping, sanding, painting, wiring, plumbing, fixing and restoring... to turn it into a functioning multi purpose community hall that will serve the people. The biggest challenge was to restore electricity - since the main fat electrical cable into the venue were cut off and we had to find which wires connected the various parts of the venue.

This is what we have done so far:
Installed security gates; cleaned the entire venue and removed several truck loads of trash; cleaned up the garden of rubble and 7 years of trash and broken bottles; repaired leaking pipes to stop flooding; scraped; sanded; painted wooden and metal exterior doors and rails; rewired much of the venue for lights and electrical plugs; cleaned and fixed the kitchen to a usable state - but far from an acceptable standard under normal conditions; and so much more.
Now we have water in the kitchen and bathrooms; electricity and lights in all the necessary areas - but much more needs to be connected; we have one working toilet and 2 hand basins. We still need to fix ladies and gents toilets, install some new fittings and repair the plumbing. But for now we are ready to start serving the community.

The Function?
The Community Kitchen will start preparing food in the morning to feed the community project workers at noon, for the morning session and again at 3pm for the afternoon session. Everyone that participates in any of the community projects will be able to get a decent plate of food, a glass of home made lemonade and coffee or tea and a free movie - every night.

Funding the Community Kitchen
While the Community Hall will provide mostly free activities for the people, there will be some activities that will be charged for. This income will buy the food for the kitchen. Those that do not participate in community projects will be able to come get a plate of food and watch a movie for R25.00 ($2.50)  This has already created excitement in the community and people are eagerly awaiting the daily activities. At 5pm every day, we will screen a conscious documentary that will inform and educate people about a variety of topics.

So far, the funding for all the repairs and upgrades have come from Michael Tellinger, income received from the sales of the UBUNTU book, money raised by Michael from his presentations around the world, and a small number of donors who make regular contributions to UBUNTU.
But the tables and chairs are just out of reach for us right now. So please make a donation here OR on the UBUNTU website if you want to become regular donor - help us open this venue as soon as possible - click on this link: http://www.ubuntuparty.org.za/p/donate.html
